Mary Joyner Disher

December 6, 1915 — May 19, 2012

Yadkinville A great lady, Mary Mozelle Joyner Disher, aka "Mama, Granny, Nanny, Grandma, and Fred," funny, witty and well-loved at 96, went home to be with her Lord and her family on May 19, 2012, after a brief illness. Born December 6, 1915 to Frank and Lela Joyner, she was raised on a farm in Flynt Hill, NC, before marrying Irvin Disher in 1936 and becoming step-mother to his 5 children. She lived and worked on the Reynolda Estate in the days when cooking turtle was an art form and Katherine was still a lake. After her husband's death, she courageously learned to drive and worked as a cafeteria worker at multiple schools including West Forsyth High School and later took a job sewing drapes before helping her son begin a successful meat processing business and working there until she was 76. She loved fried fatback, gravy biscuits, the Dixie Classic Fair, snow and snow cream, canning anything that grew on a tree, bush or vine, dolls, bells and coffee full of cream and just hot enough to boil. Already in heaven waiting to see her are her parents; her husband Irvin; daughter Mabel; an infant son; step- children Ira, Bud, Den, Sis and Elsie; grandson Mitch; great grandson Clint; daughter-in-law Ida Mae; siblings Beulah, Tom, Sant, Rich, Grace, Walt, AZ, and Lula. Missing her here are her four children: I.F. "Frankie" Disher, Johnny Disher (Carolyn), Jo Ann Gough (Danny), and Jane Disher; grandchildren Dale, Chris, Celeste, David, Tim, Jeff and Dana; great grandchildren Ryan, Jessica, Katlyn, Chad, Stephanie, Cheyanne, Cara, Will, Jacob, JohnLee, LillieMae and Raine; six great-great grandchildren; and a sister Annie Margaret. She was a great lady, a fantastic cook, a hard worker, a loving wife, mother, friend, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was our hero and will be missed until we see her again. Although we are grateful for her 96 years, 196 would not have been enough with such a wonderful lady. We will celebrate her life with friends at Gentry Funeral Home Monday night from 7-9 pm and a memorial service will be held at Union United Methodist Church on Shallowford Road on Tuesday at 11:00 with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Katherine B. Reynolds Hospice Home at 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Online condolences may be made at www.gentryfuneralservice.com. Gentry Funeral Service in Yadkinville is serving the Disher family.
