Annie Loutricia Burgess

August 4, 1953 — April 30, 2025

Hamptonville

Mrs. Annie Loutricia Burgess, 71, unexpectedly passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. She was born at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin on August 4, 1953. Loutricia graduated with honors from Elkin High School in 1971 and continued her education at several secondary colleges, including Appalachian State and Forsyth Tech. After the birth of her daughter, she worked full-time and took night classes at Gardner Webb College (now University), ultimately graduating in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems. She remarkably managed and ran the entire computer and data processing systems at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital during the infancy of such systems. Her knowledge and experience led to many frantic midnight phone calls to come in and “fix” the system whenever it went down. She was invaluable to her colleagues and the running of the hospital for over 22 years.

Although dedicated to her career, nothing was more important to Loutricia than her family. Even with a demanding career, she never missed a game, recital, school event, or volunteer activity. She encouraged her children to pursue their dreams, even when it took them far away from home, as her son, Andrew, pursued a degree at Indiana Wesleyan University and lived in Portland, Maine for many years as a graphic designer and her daughter, Laura, pursued an undergraduate degree at Tulane University in New Orleans and a law degree from Boston University. She was incredibly proud of her children’s achievements and never missed an opportunity to brag about their successes. However, she also supported them during the hard times – the heartbreaks, the losses, and the setbacks – always ready with a big hug and words of comfort. Her children always knew they had a place to come home to whenever they needed.

Although she loved being a “mama”, there was no title Loutricia loved more than “granny.” Her 5 grandsons were the light of her life. She was never without a story or picture to show wherever she went, and even while feeble, she was happy to attend eldest grandson Jonah’s high school graduation last May. Perhaps the greatest surprise of her life was Laura’s announcement of pregnancy on Christmas Day 2023 and then the birth of her grandson, Wesley, on her anniversary, May 6, 2024. While only together a short-while, Laura is forever grateful that her mother helped her navigate motherhood, and that she got to meet Wes and be a part of his life.

In addition to her family, Loutricia loved the Lord. She attended Calvary Wesleyan Church in Elkin, beginning as a child with her parents, Clyde and Gladys, and later as an adult with her daughter. She also introduced her husband, Dewey, and his son, Andrew, to the church soon after they began dating in the late 1980s – ultimately leading to Andrew meeting his now wife, DeAnne, who is daughter of the pastor, Jesse Garmon. Loutricia’s faithful dedication blessed her with the family she so loved and cherished, and she never missed an opportunity to tell her husband, children and grandchildren how much she loved them. The hole that she has left in each of their hearts will be impossible to fill. She will be deeply missed by all those who love her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde Goins, Sr. and Gladys Goins, and numerous step-brothers and sisters. Loutricia is survived by her loving husband, Dewey Burgess, with whom she would have celebrated 35 years of marriage on May 6th; children, Laura Nicholson (Mark Jackson) and Andrew (DeAnne) Burgess; grandchildren, Jonah Burgess, Ian Burgess, Max Burgess, Ben Burgess, and Wesley Jackson; sister, Kathy (Bobby) Colbert and brother, Ronald (Tina) Gentry; and step-siblings, Ramona Collins and Clyde (Vicky) Goins, Jr.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2025 in the Gentry Family Chapel in Yadkinville. Interment will follow at Asbury United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville is serving the Burgess family.
