Mr. Archie Marvin Brown, Jr., 83, passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2026. He was born in Surry County on September 4, 1942 to Archie Marvin Brown, Sr. and Effie Ruth Slater Brown. Archie graduated from East Bend High School in 1961. He was raised in the Fall Creek community. Archie made many fond memories growing up with his cousins, Jimmy and Rodney Brown, riding their bicycles and sneaking into the Fall Creek gym to play basketball. Archie would often tell folks he would meet out of town that he was from East Bend or Fall Creek, rather than telling them he was from Yadkinville, which was more commonly known. He served in the United States Army and then later in the National Guard. Archie did his basic training in Fort Gordon, Georgia. During his time in the service, his father put his prized possession, a 1957 black Chevrolet, in their shed wrapped in quilts and did not allow anyone to touch it until Archie returned home. Archie enjoyed watching westerns and watching the Redskins play. More than anything, Archie loved his family. He would always make time to go to his grandchildren’s games and events. He loved watching Will play basketball and lacrosse, Nick play basketball, soccer, and lacrosse, Emery do musicals, chorus, and lead the marching band as drum major, and Eleanor perform at her dance recitals. He enjoyed his wife’s cooking and had quite the sweet tooth – his grandchildren always knew where the sweets had gone when they went missing. Archie was a very giving person and would always tell his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews that his home was always open and to call him if they ever needed him or may be in trouble. Despite his love of football and the Redskins, there was a time his niece needed help during a time of bad weather and he even missed the Superbowl game to help her. He was well loved and will be very missed by all who loved him.
Archie is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Brenda McCollum Brown; daughter, Teresa Styers and husband, David; son, Gray Brown and wife, Jamie; grandchildren, William Styers, Nickolas Styers, Emery Brown, and Eleanor Brown; brother, Ray Brown and wife, Dinah; sisters, Kaye Patterson and Jane Adams; brother-in-law, Dewey Dunn; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Ann Dunn and Mary Ruth Brown and brother-in-law, Dallas Patterson.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2026 at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 1, 2026 at Gentry Family Chapel in Yadkinville. Burial will follow at Shacktown Church of Christ cemetery. The family would like to express a sincere thank you to Dr. Clark, the nurses, and other MICU team, especially Dr. Ashley Johnston, from Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for the love and compassion given to Archie and his family during this difficult time.
