Archie James Matthews

March 28, 1940 — June 10, 2025

East Bend

Mr. Archie James Matthews, 85, of East Bend, NC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at Forsyth Medical Center, surrounded by the love of his family and the faith that guided his life. Born March 28, 1940, in Yadkin County to the late Robert “Bob” Matthews and Enola Wall Matthews, Archie was the youngest of nine siblings, all of whom preceded him in death. Though the last of his generation, he carried their legacy with strength, kindness, and an enduring sense of humor.

A proud graduate of East Bend High School, Archie began his professional life at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, where he served with dedication until retirement. But Archie’s passion for connection and community didn’t end there. He continued working as an auctioneer and real estate agent for 35 years, earning the respect and friendship of countless clients and colleagues throughout Yadkin County and beyond.

Archie’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. A devoted member of Prospect United Methodist Church, he was active in the Men’s Club, lent his strong voice to the church choir, and faithfully served in countless ways. His life was one of service—to his church, his community, and most especially, to his family.

Archie’s love story with his wife of nearly 60 years, Barbara Taylor Matthews, was a beautiful example of enduring devotion. Together they built a life rooted in love, laughter, music, and faith. Archie found great joy in singing alongside Barbara and in various settings over the years, sharing his gift of music with all who would listen.

Above all, Archie treasured his role as “PawPaw.” For the past 32 years, he poured his heart into the lives of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending every event, cheering from the sidelines, and always making time for hugs, stories, and songs. His legacy of love will echo in their lives for generations.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara, of the home; his devoted children, Mark Matthews (Jill) and Angel Messick (Trent); his adored grandchildren, Mahlon Matthews (Christine), Carson Matthews (Kaylee), Chandler Butner (Cameron), Addyson Sokolosky (Steve), and Landrey Messick; and great-grandchildren Parker Matthews and Hudson Butner. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Jesse Taylor (Jo Ann), sister-in-law Rosa Matthews, and many nieces, nephews, and cherished friends who were like family.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 12, from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at Gentry Family Funeral Service in East Bend. A celebration of Archie’s life will follow at 3:00 PM at Prospect United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Stuart Jones and Rev. Laura Jones. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Flowers are welcome, or memorials may be made to Prospect United Methodist Church, 3541 Smithtown Road, East Bend, NC 27018.

Archie James Matthews lived a life of faith, family, and purpose. His gentle spirit, hearty laugh, and unwavering love will be deeply missed—but never forgotten.
