Barbara Combs Cottrell

Mrs. Barbara Combs Cottrell, 72, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2026. She was born July 10, 1954, in Surry County, to the late Jerry Donald “Don” Combs and Della Mae Davis Combs. In addition to her parents Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Rommie “Dink” Childress; her son and daughter-in-law, Gary Dwayne Childress and Montine Driver Childress; nephew, Chad Daniel Cook Swaim. Barbara spent her time helping others; her family, friends and those she served during her career with the Department of Social Services. Her love language was cooking, preparing delicious meals for those she cared for. The joy of her life was her grandchildren, especially her youngest granddaughter, Olivia, with whom she shared a very special bond. She is survived by her son, Gerry (Kayla) Childress; her daughter, Renee Johnson; grandchildren, Olivia Childress, Ryan (Rebecca) Childress, Dylan Childress, Morgan Johnson, Kolby Easterling, Kyle Easterling; great-grandchildren, Lily Johnson, James Childress, Joseph Childress; sister, Renita (Richie) Swaim; special friend for many years, Kamia Barker; and her special K9 companion, Macy Grace. The family will receive friends, Friday, August 21, 2026 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Jonesville. Her funeral service will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, August 22, 2026 in the Gentry Family Chapel, burial will follow at Swan Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Jonesville is serving the Cottrell family.
