YADKINVILLE -    Mr. Billy Gene Hutchens, 88, who was lovingly known as “Poppie” in the community, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 11, 2024 at his home.  He was born May 1, 1935 in Yadkin County to the late William R. and Nellie Jane Spillman Hutchens.  Mr. Hutchens retired with 33 years of service from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, and then enjoyed selling and trading cars with Midtown Motors in East Bend for several years.  He loved fast cars and enjoyed them either at Bowman-Gray Stadium or watching the NASCAR circuit.  He also loved sports especially watching the UNC Tarheels and the New York Yankees.   Mr. Hutchens was a member of Forbush Baptist Church and attended Turners Creek Baptist Church when his health permitted.   In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Jerlean Hutchens; brothers, Melvin (Jesse) Hutchens, William (Annie) Hutchens, Moses (Shelby) Hutchens; and a sister, Ruby Hutchens.   Surviving are his son, Randy G. Hutchens and wife, Joy; grandson, Kyle (Jami) Hutchens; great-grandchildren, Avery, Adalee, Ansley Hutchens; granddaughter, Kristina (Charlie) Bodenheimer; great-grandchildren, McKenzie and Matthew Bodenheimer; and his sister, Hattie (George) Vestal.  The family will receive friends from 1:00-3:00 PM Sunday at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville.  His funeral service will follow the visitation at 3:00 PM Sunday in the Gentry Family Chapel by Rev. Jason Penley.  Interment will follow in the Turners Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family would like to extend their gratitude to Well Care Hospice staff Anna and Shirl; also to Sharon and Selena, and to Mrs. Daisy Caregivers for all the loving care, patience, and support given to Mr. Hutchens.   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to YVEDDI Meals on Wheels.  Online condolences may be made to www.gentryfuneralservice.com.
