101-year-old World War II veteran, Mr. Charles Odell Cheek, passed away Wednesday, August 5, 2026. He was born April 11, 1925 in Yadkin County to the late William Frank Cheek and Aldia Kathryn Shore Cheek. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 77 years, Ellen Casstevens Cheek; his sister, Mabel Cheek; his brothers, Marvin, Joe, George, J.D., and Jim. At 18 years of age, he volunteered for the United States Army in 1943. After serving several months in the United States, he was sent oversees to the Pacific, serving a year on Okinawa. He was wounded and spent several months in the hospital. He was honorably discharged in April 1946. After returning home, he farmed for many years and then he went to work for Yadkin Valley Telephone and retired with 18 years of service. He was a proud member of Yadkin VFW Post #10346 Honor Guard for many years as long as his health permitted. He is survived by his daughter, Sue (Johnny) Mitchell, his son, Charles (Carlene) Cheek; grandchildren, Miranda (Brian) Laws, Candace (Tony) Obermeier, Allison (Jake) Pursley; great-grandchildren, Addison Obermeier, Evan Obermeier, Wellsley Pursley. The family will receive friends, Saturday, August 8, 2026 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. A graveside service will be 2:00 PM, Sunday, August 9, 2026 at Longtown Cemetery with full honors provided by Yadkin VFW Post #10346 and United States Army Honor Guard. The family would like to thank the staff of Willowbrook for their patience and care for dad during this time in his life. A special thank you to Melissa Greene for her years of compassion and loving care for our mom until her passing and then our dad until his passing.
