In Loving Memory of Derek Lee Porter
In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years. - A.L.
It is with profound sadness that we announce Derek Lee Porter, age 57 of Winston-Salem, left this life on August 1, 2025, after a courageous, admirable battle with illness. He faced his illness with the same strength and determination that he brought to every part of his life. Throughout this journey, he was never alone. By his side every step of the way was Laurie, whose unwavering love and compassion were a true testament to their bond. Their partnership was one of deep connection, quiet understanding, and unconditional support.
Derek was deeply connected to the water. Whether casting a line at a favorite fishing spot, speeding across a quiet lake, or simply sitting in a shady cove enjoying the rhythm of the waves against his treasured bass boat, he found his greatest peace on the water. To him, fishing was more than a hobby; it was a way of life and a way to connect with others.
Derek never met a stranger. His circle of friends was wide and ever-growing, from lifelong companions to people he had just met. He believed in never letting a friend go without a laugh. He reminded us not to take life to seriously. With a quick wit, a sharp sense of humor and a knack for making people laugh, he could light up any room and lift any spirit.
Derek leaves behind his beloved partner Laurie Hayes and her daughter Riley Tucker, his father Rommie (Linda) Porter, his mother Kaye M. Moore, his brother Darrin (Phillip) Porter, his uncles Lee (Sherry) McCulloh and George Porter, his aunt Brenda (Bill) Walker and numerous cousins. In addition to his family, he is survived by many lifelong friends and fellow fishermen who were like family to him, with whom he shared countless memories.
Our hearts are so very heavy. We take comfort in knowing his stories, jokes, and spirit will live on in every smile he inspired. Though he has cast his final line, the memories he created will ripple on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
As Derek requested, a Celebration of Life gathering will be held at a later date. Family and Friends will be notified when plans are finalized.
