Doris Mathis

Doris Gray Mathis, 90, of Hamptonville, passed away on Thursday, February 12, 2026 after a brief illness at Hugh Chatham Hospital, surrounded by her daughter, grandson and two special friends.

Doris was born on October 3, 1935 to the late Weaver Gray and Grace Redding Gray. She loved watching NASCAR racing and cheering on her Atlanta Braves. She found great joy in cooking and working in her garden. Doris especially loved her sunflowers and zinnias that were around her home. Doris also enjoyed watching the birds on her bird feeder. She was a member of Dennyville Baptist Church and dearly loved her church family. Doris retired from Hanes after 35 years.

In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her daughter, Gale Conley and sister, Fern Gray.

Those left to cherish Doris’ memory include her daughter, Sharon Holcomb, grandchildren, Billy (Amy) Holcomb, Christopher Conley, Renee (Jody) Call, brother, Russell (Wanda) Gray and son-in-law, Ray Conley. Also surviving are her nieces, Susan Gray, Patricia McKaig, great nephews, John and Ben McKaig. Also special friends, Magdaline and JC Shelton, Joe Denny, WC Gregory, Terry Stutts, Claude Gregory, Ruth Martin and all her church family.

The family will visit with friends on Monday, February 16, 2026, at Dennyville Baptist Church from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm with Rev. Jason Wiles and Rev. Joel Riley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
