EAST BEND – Mr. George Joseph Hennings, 93, of Butner Mill Road passed away Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at the Yadkinville Nursing Facility. He was a leap year baby born on February 29, 1932, in Yadkin County to the late Henry ‘Tom’ Thomas Hennings and Emma ‘Sophronia’ Binkley Hennings. Mr. Hennings was a graduate of East Bend High School where he was voted as ‘friendliest’ by the class of 1950; moreover, he was a baseball team member, served on the student council, was a member of the bus patrol, and was a member of the Future Farmers of America [FFA]. George enjoyed singing; he sang for any occasion, whether it was by himself or with a group of musicians. In 2006, George performed with his grandchildren, Cara and Jace Davis, in the local community theater performance of Beauty and the Beast in Elkin, NC. Over the past 30+ years, he volunteered his time and service to sing and play guitar at local nursing/retirement homes. He served stateside in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant in the Korean Conflict (1952–1954). He belonged to the East Bend American Legion, where he also served as a chaplain and proudly helped with military honors for fallen soldiers with the local VFW Post. He, also, volunteered his time and service to help the East Bend Senior Center deliver meals on wheels. George loved studying/learning about the history of this vibrant community; which he enjoyed sharing with others. Mr. Hennings was a faithful member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church where he served as a Sunday School Teacher and Choir Member. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Bonnie Jean Smith Hennings; his sisters, Helen (Carroll) Simmons, Earlene (Melvin) Speas, and Adelene Hope Hennings; his brothers, Thomas Elwood (Edith) Hennings, Charles "Edgar" (Ann) Hennings; and granddaughter, Amanda Elizabeth Hennings. Surviving are his children, Eddy (Vickie) Hennings, Andy (Debbie) Hennings, Cindy (Arvon) Davis; grandchildren, Shelly Hartman, Tina (Allen) Jester, Cara Jean Davis, Jace Alexander Davis; great-grandchildren, Jody (Brittany) Jester, Adrienne Jester, Dylan Priddy; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. His funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, September 13, 2025, in the Gentry Family Chapel of Gentry Funeral Service in East Bend by Rev. Stuart Jones and Rev. Laura-Lee Jones. Burial will follow in the Shady Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery with full military honors by the Yadkin VFW Post 10346. The family will receive friends after the graveside service in the fellowship hall of the church, where refreshments will be provided by the church. Memorials may be made to Liberty Hospice, 336 N South St, Mt. Airy, NC 27030, in memory of Mr. George Hennings. The family would also like to extend their gratitude to the Yadkinville Nursing Facility caregivers, nurses, doctors, administrative staff, reverends, etc. for all their expertise and loving care given to Mr. Hennings.
