Mr. Gregory “Gus” Paul Habowski, 71, passed away on Thursday, November 27, 2025. He was born in Portage County, Ohio on April 4, 1954 to Walter John Habowski and Rosemary Cafero Habowski. He served in the United States Army. Gus was a SP5 (Sergeant), worked as a missile launcher mechanical/high power radar, and served in the 1st Battalion, 2nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment. He served overseas during two tours in Korea and Germany. They were the only active combat unit after Vietnam War ended. The unit was a surface to air mobile missile unit to keep infantry safe from someone flying in on them (hawk missile battery). He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and M-16 Rifle Expert Badge. He worked as a chief engineer in property management for many, many years in Lakewood, Ohio. Gus attended St. Stephen Catholic Church in Elkin. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing, landscaping, and gardening. One of his favorite trips he made consecutively for 10 years was going to ride 4-wheelers in the mountains at the Hatfield and McCoy trails, where he joined the same group of men each year for their annual trip. Gus will be deeply missed by all who loved him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Paige. He is survived by a brother, Ronnie Habowski (Melissa); sisters, Doret Habowski and Marianne Uffindell (Colin); children, Jessica Grace (Richard), Walter John (Tina), and Gregory Paul; grandchildren, Jacob (Chelsey), Ethan, Kaylie, and Autumn; and great-grandchildren, Walker, Winston, Nasir, and Samir.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 4, 2025 at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel. Military honors will be rendered following the funeral service by Yadkin VFW Post 10346. The family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the Yadkin VFW Post 10346 and the American Legion Post 336 for the love, support, and friendship shown to Gus over the years.
