Harold and Nell were happily married for 35 years at which time Nell succumbed to a long battle with cancer. Harold was an integral part of R.H. Johnson Construction Co., for many years. Harold bid many jobs in the southeast and oversaw the installation of significant infrastructure for the City of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County – much of which continues to be in use today. After his time with R. H. Johnson Construction Co., Harold continued working in the construction field with his nephews, Dan and David, and brother Gray, who later took over the business which still exists today.
In 1973 Harold felt the call of God on his life and began his journey in the ministry. From then until 1978, he studied at John Wesley College earning his doctorate degree and began the Recording Process for ministers serving in North Carolina Yearly Meeting. As part of his preparation during his studies, he pastored at Statesville Friends Meeting and at Union Hill Friends Meeting in Mount Airy. Harold began his first full-time pastorate at Oakland Friends Meeting in Princeville, NC, in 1978. Harold’s ministry continued at Trinity Friends Meeting, Back Creek Friends Meeting, and Harmony Grove Friends Meeting. While serving at Harmony Grove, Harold reconnected with Janet Brannon, they fell in love, and married in 1995 in Pigeon Forge. At the end of his pastorate at Harmony Grove Friends Meeting, Harold was ready to retire but the Lord had other plans. He was called as an interim pastor for Winthrop Friends Meeting where he continued serving for another 23.5 years. He retired in February 2023 from Winthrop Friends Meeting. Harold was a well-respected and beloved speaker for revivals and other events throughout North Carolina Yearly Meeting and Friends Church of North Carolina. In his role as pastor, he flourished as a mentor, guide, counselor, and friend to all. He frequently helped with construction projects throughout the community and state. Altogether, Harold served 50 years in North Carolina Yearly Meeting and Friends Church of North Carolina.
Harold lived his witness and never doubted the sovereignty of the Lord in this world or his life. It is Harold’s earnest desire that if you do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, that you not delay welcoming the loving embrace of our Lord today. Don’t wait!
