ELKIN – Mr. John “Alfred” Simmons, 86, of Grassy Fork Road passed away peacefully, Monday, October 5, 2026 at Yadkin Nursing Center. He was born January 17, 1940 in Surry County to the late Hillery and Mamie Mae Draughn Simmons.

Mr. Simmons retired with over 40 years of service from Chatham Manufacturing in Elkin, and worked several years with Sprinkle Tire of Jonesville. He was a faithful member of Island Ford Baptist Church and cherished his pastor, Dr. Charlie Kennedy, along with the loving church family he experienced while attending.

In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his sisters, Barbara Ann (Richard) Elledge, Pauline (Odie) Blevins, Kay Hall; and brothers, J.T. (Lorene) Simmons, Henry Simmons, and Wade (Ruby) Simmons.

Surviving are his wife, Velda Simmons; his children, Linda (Jay) Cockerham, Karen (Mike) Simpson, Jeff (Jeannie) Simmons; 7 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; lots of nieces, nephews, and close friends including Carl and his wife, and Jimmy Jenkins.

The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 PM Sunday, October 11, 2026 at Island Ford Baptist Church. His funeral service will follow the visitation at 2 PM Sunday in the church with Dr. Charlie Kennedy, officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the nurses and staff of Yadkin Nursing Center for all their loving care provided to Mr. Simmons.
