Mrs. Kay Casstevens Campbell, 65, of Boonville, North Carolina, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on July 18, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family and the comfort of her enduring faith.
Born January 30, 1960, in Yadkin County, Kay was the beloved daughter of the late Gerald Royce Casstevens and Frances Harding Casstevens. She grew up in Yadkinville alongside her five siblings: Danny, Caren, Michael, Tony, and Timmy. From an early age, Kay displayed determination, talent, and an athletic spirit, especially on the softball field where she was known for her powerful home runs. She graduated from Forbush High School, having already built a foundation of resilience that would define her life.
Despite being diagnosed with dyslexia as a child, Kay embodied perseverance, living by her personal motto: “Never give up.” She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Appalachian State University in 1983, where she formed a treasured, lifelong friendship with her best friend and “sister,” Selinda (Blackwell) Moxley. Their bond only deepened as they pursued nursing together at Winston-Salem State University, where Kay graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1992.
For over thirty (30) years, Kay dedicated herself to the nursing profession with compassion, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to her patients. She spent much of her career at the 9th Floor (9CC) Oncology Cancer Center of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where her care touched countless lives. Her kindness, empathy, and excellence earned her the admiration of patients, families, and colleagues alike.
On December 23, 1989, Kay married her soulmate, Douglas Kenneth Campbell. Together, they shared thirty-five (35) wonderful years of marriage, building a life grounded in love, faith, and family. Kay and Doug were active members of North Oak Ridge Baptist Church, where Kay lived out her faith in both word and deed.
Her love for Christ led her to serve others not only at home but abroad. In 2007, Kay embarked on a life-changing month-long mission trip to Africa, using her nursing skills to care for those in need. That same year, she served on a mission trip to Jamaica with her children, a testament to her commitment to raising them in faith and service. Kay ministered daily through her words, actions, and example—sharing the love of Christ with her family, patients, and everyone she met.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents Gerald Royce Casstevens (March 16, 1990) and Frances Harding Casstevens (September 16, 2009); her brother, Timothy Thomas Casstevens (November 21, 2003); her sister, Caren Joanne Casstevens (December 19, 2019); and her great-grandfather, Franklin Daniel Boone Harding (1978) (North Carolina State Senate 1965-66, and North Carolina State House of Representatives 1949-50, 1961-64).
She leaves behind her devoted husband, Douglas Kenneth Campbell; her loving children, Kayla Nicole Ariza-Campbell (Brian) and Corey Douglas Campbell (Tara); and her cherished granddaughter, Eleanor Emma-Shirley Lucille Ariza-Campbell, who was the light of her life. She is also survived by her godchildren, John Nathaniel Moxley and Morgan Elizabeth Moxley; her treasured “sister,” Selinda Moxley (Richie); her brothers Tony Layne Casstevens, Gerald Daniel Casstevens (Eva) and his sons Jacob (Ann) and Simon (Kim), and Michael Lee Casstevens (Julie) and their children Amber and Wesley.
Kay loved without limits and gave of herself freely. She was a beacon of grace, faith, and love—leaving behind a legacy that will live on through her family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known her.
A visitation will be held at North Oak Ridge Baptist Church on Sunday, July 27, 2025, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., followed by a service celebrating her life and faith at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the North Oak Ridge Baptist Church Missions Fund.
