Lucy Ann Martin Taylor

July 13, 1928 — June 9, 2023

Mrs. Lucy Ann Martin Taylor, 94, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 9, 2023 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. She was born on July 13, 1928 in Boonville, NC to the late Roger & Etta Mae Martin. She was a devoted wife of 55 years to the late Richard Taylor, and a mother to eight remarkable children. Their long-lasting marriage and family were both built around God. In her early years, Lucy was employed at Hoots Memorial Hospital as a Nurse’s Aide and housekeeper; she later retired from Vaughan Bassett Furniture Company. Additionally, she took pride in working alongside her husband and family priming tobacco or farming. When she wasn’t working, she could be found spending time with her family, indulging in her love for cooking, and tending to her flowers. No matter when you visited her, she would have a meal prepared that was big enough to feed an army. A typical Sunday would start by waking up with the chickens, her cooking a huge breakfast which was generally biscuits and gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage/ham, and oatmeal; you would then go to church, and after service, everyone would come back and enjoy dinner together which would include: fried chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, creamed corn, pinto beans, biscuits, freshly sliced cucumbers and tomatoes, a cake of cornbread, and sweet tea. Aside from Sundays, she loved for you to drop by anytime, except between 1-2pm when the “Stories” were on, unless you were bringing her a pop, a nab, or some snuff. She was very quick witted and never scared to tell you what you needed to hear rather than what you wanted to hear. You were sure to leave her house with some words of wisdom, a full stomach, and a smile. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard “Big Rich” Taylor; brother, Bill (Jessilene) Martin; son, Roger Glenn; daughter-in-law, Ivy Porter-Taylor; grandson, Oscar Taylor Jr. Left to cherish her memories are her children: Molly Glenn, Lillie “Ann” Taylor, Richard “Leon” Taylor, Ray (Tina) Taylor, Roy (Cynthia) Taylor, Ricky (Barbara) Taylor, and John “Kenny” Taylor; 22 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 6 great great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and her K-9 sidekick, Cindy. She was known to many as: Mama, Mama Lucy, Aunt Lucy, or Granny; no matter what you may have called her, she was deeply loved by all that knew her and her presence will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends, Friday, June 16, 2023 from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM at Gentry Family Funeral Service. Her funeral service will follow the visitation at 1:00 PM, in the Gentry Family Chapel with Rev. Dr. James L.E. Hunt officiating and song selection by Deborah Dobson. Burial will follow in the Boonville First Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville is serving the Taylor family.
