Lynda Mae “Lynn” Stewart Grove, 86, of Mount Airy, NC, went home to be with her Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. She passed peacefully after complications due to Alzheimer’s disease.
Born in Washington, Iowa, to Richard and Ruth (Finney) Stewart, Lynn grew up with a love for faith, family, fellowship, and learning. While attending Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois, she met her sweetheart, Judson Theodore Grove, and a year later, they were married. Jud & Lynn celebrated 63 beautiful years of marriage together.
After teaching school for 2 years in Long Beach, California, Lynn discovered her greatest calling as a mother to her three precious daughters: Sheri Anne Grove Harris, Laurie Lynne Grove, and Gayle Deanna Grove Shrewsbury. When her girls were young, she gladly took on the role of stay-at-home mom and homemaker, dedicating herself wholeheartedly to her family with love, care, and devotion.
Lynn’s love for the Lord overflowed into every part of her life. She regularly prayed, read her Bible, and looked for ways to share Christ’s love with others, including starting Nehemiah Helping Hand’s Ministries, a nonprofit that assisted those facing financial hardships. Lynn and Jud attended Christ For The Nations Bible College in Dallas, Texas, to expand their biblical studies. Although she never advertised it, Lynn hosted and discipled several people in need of housing. To others, she was a mentor and mother figure.
The adventures of the Grove family led them to live in multiple states throughout Lynn’s life, including California, Texas, Idaho, Colorado, and ultimately North Carolina. Wherever she went, Lynn had a gift for making everyday moments special. She loved hosting family gatherings, doting on her grandchildren with her signature “love pats,” and tending to bumps and scrapes with Granny’s famous “healing saliva.” She found joy in playing the piano, decorating for holidays, tending her plants, making crafts, enjoying long baths, cheering for the underdogs, and, of course, indulging in chocolate. She loved to travel and visited many states, as well as Brazil, Spain, Israel, and Jamaica alongside Jud during his consulting work. Lynn’s spunky, lively personality and genuine compassion, humility, and generosity touched everyone she met, and she will be deeply missed.
Lynn was preceded in death by her brother, William Allen “Bill” Stewart of Iowa, her eldest daughter, Sheri Anne Grove Harris of Mount Airy, NC, and son-in-law, Hugh Allen Harris of Mount Airy, NC. She is survived by her husband, Judson Grove of Mount Airy; sister, Pat Stout of Iowa; daughters, Laurie Grove of Mount Airy, & Gayle Grove (Ricky) Shrewsbury of Virginia; grandchildren Hannah (David) Bell of Salisbury, Rebekah (Michael) Jolly of Mount Airy; and great-grandchildren, Eliza Bell, Obadiah Bell, & Ezra Jolly.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at New Day Assembly of God in Hamptonville, NC. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Samaritan's Purse (www.samaritanspurse.org or PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607) or Mountain Valley Hospice, PO Box 325, Dobson, NC, 27017 or mtnvalleyhospice.org.
