Margerette Johnson Shaffner

Margerette Shaffner, 89, formerly of Elkin, passed away Monday, February 19, 2024 at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Shaffner was born on April 2, 1934 in Surry County to the late James Claude and Lena Stanley Johnson. She worked for 26 years as a tax preparer for H&R Block and was an avid researcher of her family genealogy. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she was the matriarch and hub of our family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Shaffner, a son, Doug Shaffner, a grandson, James Grubb, four sisters Alice Johnson, Mary Davis, Vallie Prince and Almeta Craddock, and three brothers, Marvin Johnson, Roscoe Johnson and Malery Johnson.

She is survived by four daughters, Shirley Stewart (Leonard), Angela Eagle, Becky Greene (Mike), Marie Menscer (Tim), and four sons, Bobby Grubb (Barbara), Keith Grubb, Bobby Shaffner, and John Shaffner. Her legacy also includes 14 grandchildren, Jennifer Timmermeyer, Mike Eagle III, Katherine Eagle, Rachel Beita, Shannon Maddox, Sarah Dorn, Matthew Grubb, Andrew Grubb, Annie Grubb, Laura Davis, Angela Bennett, Jason Greene, Nathan Menscer and Hannah Graham plus 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. She is also survived by two sisters, Billie Spruill and Clara Mae Hillard.

Visitation with the family will be held Saturday, February 24 from 10-10:45am at Little Richmond Baptist Church, 9609 NC Hwy 268, Elkin, NC. The service will be held at 11am followed by a graveside service in the church cemetery. Jimmy Stuller will be officiating. Donations in her memory may be given to Little Richmond Baptist Church (mail to 164 Kitty Way, Elkin NC 28621).

Gentry Family Funeral Home in Jonesville is serving the Shaffner family.
