Mary Brewer Ladd gained her angel wings on Thursday morning, August 20th in Raleigh, NC following a courageous battle with cancer.
Mary was a beloved wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. On August 20, 1937, she was born in Littleton, North Carolina in Halifax County to Ernest Brewer and Mary Foxwell Brewer. She attended Littleton Elementary and graduated from Littleton High School in 1955. She married Zack Frank Ladd on September 8, 1956 at Forest Hills Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC. They would have been married 70 years this September 8th.
After her wedding to Zack in 1956, they lived in Raleigh until 1958, when Zack graduated from N.C. State University they moved to Yadkinville, NC. They lived with Zack’s mother on the family farm until building their own home on the farm in 1960. They raised their 3 children, Debbie, Ernie, and Doug there. Mary was beautiful, kind, gentle and a devoted wife and mother, known especially for her delicious homemade cooking and home-grown roses which she shared with family, with the sick, and at church. She loved to shop and had a keen eye for quality and value.
She and Zack loved to travel around the world on the many trips with Farm Bureau Insurance as well as spending time in their vacation home in Blowing Rock.
Mary was a member of First Baptist Church of Yadkinville for 68 years. She taught Sunday School as well as serving in the nursery and outreach ministries providing meals.
Mary worked for 25 years as a Medical Records Specialist at Dr. Irving Scherer’s private practice and was outstanding in her position.
Mary was honored with an award for outstanding exemplary community service by Governor James Hunt during his second tenure as governor of North Carolina for her many hours of service to the local community. She volunteered for Hospice and Cancer services and had a vast impact on so many lives in doing so.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Edward Allen Brewer and Walter Henry Brewer, and her sisters Sarah Warren, Alice Dickens, Anne Stauffer, and Caroline Kastelberg. She is survived by her husband Zack, her children Debbie Ladd Gunn of High Point, Ernie Ladd (Annette) of Winston Salem, and Doug Ladd (Beth) of Raleigh; grandchildren Jeremie Gunn (Alexis), Jennifer Earp (Zachary), Jessica Doss (Alex), Joshua Ladd (Lindsay), Mary-Ann Autry (Jeremy), Monica Burke (Graham), and Zackary Ladd; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mary’s life was characterized by love – love for her Lord, love for her family, and love for her many friends. She had a love for missions as well as she and Zack supported 8 different missionaries all around the world.
A celebration of life service will be held at First Baptist Church of Yadkinville on Thursday, August 27th at 2:00 p.m. There will be a visitation at the church fellowship hall following the service.
