Mayo Moxley Prim

Mayo Moxley Prim February 6, 1937 – September 16, 2026

Mayo Moxley Prim was born on February 6, 1937, in Yadkin County, North Carolina, to Mae Short Moxley and A.F. “Bill” Moxley. She was raised in Yadkin County, attended Yadkinville High School and had her family and career there.

Mayo was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, businesswoman, and friend. She was married to Dean Prim, who preceded her in death in 1975.

Mayo was the proud mother of three children: Billy D. (Deborah Prim), Jeannie (Ronald Cannon), and Luanne (Chris Holden). She was also a loving grandmother to Austin, Alexa, Tanner, Travis, and Sarcanda. She had a grandson, Anthony, who predeceased her. Her great-grandchildren, Cannon, Rowan, Poppy, Charlie Mae, Jager, Xander, Cannen, Brendan, and Karlee—brought her great joy and were deeply loved by her. Mayo also shared a treasured friendship with Maxine Schrader, with whom she shared countless memories, laughter, and a special bond that will always be cherished.

Mayo was a lifelong member of North Oak Ridge Baptist Church, where her faith and her church family were an important part of her life. She served as the church pianist for several years and enjoyed singing with the church choir.

Mayo served for two years on the Yadkin County Board of Education, giving her time and dedication to the community she loved. She was also a dedicated businesswoman, owning and operating Moxley Oil and Gas with her son, Billy D., until her retirement.

She spent many summers at Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina, and later in life resided there for several years. Lake Waccamaw held a special place in Mayo’s heart. She loved peaceful afternoons sipping peach tea on the pier and especially enjoyed playing Rummikub each week with her many friends at the lake. She particularly looked forward to the 4th of July celebrations at Lake Waccamaw on the McNeil Pier, creating treasured memories with family and friends.

Mayo was an avid baker and was known throughout her family as the very best cook and chef. Her love of cooking and baking was one of the ways she showed her love for others. She especially treasured Christmases and Thanksgivings when the entire family could gather together around the table.

In honor of Mayo’s wonderful culinary talents, her family has made sure that her love of cooking will live on for generations to come by compiling an extensive collection of her favorite recipes. These cherished recipes will allow her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and future generations to continue enjoying the dishes that brought so much love and joy to her family’s table.

The family would like to extend a special and heartfelt thank-you to the Liberty Hospice group and the Bradley Creek employees of Wilmington, North Carolina for the loving care, kindness, and support they provided to Mayo during her final days. Their compassion brought comfort to Mayo and her family during a very difficult time.

Above all, Mayo adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family was at the heart of her life, and the memories she created with them will be treasured for generations to come.

A funeral service celebrating Mayo’s life will be held at North Oak Ridge Baptist Church on Sunday, September 27th, 2026 at 1:00pm. The service will be followed by the family meeting with guests in the Fellowship Hall.
