Mickey Ray Childress

Mickey Ray Childress, 72, passed away peacefully Saturday morning September 30, 2023. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Mickey was born June 6, 1951 to the late Odell and Pauline Childress. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Vickie, Rita, and Sandra, and his brother, Wendell. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Dawn Childress of the home, his wonderful sons, Elliott Childress and Cory Childress, his brothers, Randy and Clay Childress, and his sister, Amy Hernandez.

Mickey had many dear friends that he loved so much. His love for his sons was so strong and special. From coaching them in baseball, in t-ball until the last game he coached them on their travel team, The Yadkin Valley Fear. His love for coaching them was so heartfelt. To all of the young men that he coached, along with Eli and Cory, he loved each and every one of them like they were his own.

His love for riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles was endless; from going to the Myrtle Beach Harley Rally to the trips he made to the beach house with his closest friends and the Sunday afternoon rides to destinations unknown. Those of you that were part of those rides know that he loved each and every person that was part of those trips.

His love for animals was also something special; from the pets he owned over the years to his cattle and donkeys – each one had a special place in his heart. His love for bluegrass music was also undeniable.

He will be at Gentry Family Funeral Service for visitation on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. A graveside service will be held at Longtown Methodist Church Cemetery on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at 11:00 AM with pastor Rob Spradley officiating.

A special thanks to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital Cancer Center and Medi Home Health and Hospice for providing Mickey with the best care possible. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will be appreciated.
