CANA, Va. -  Mr. Richard Eugene Smith, 57, passed away peacefully at his home.  He was born April 12, 1966 in Surry County to the late Robert E. and Lula Mae Potts Smith.   Mr. Smith worked in construction as an iron worker for most of his life.  He was a loving grandfather, and enjoyed being the greatest “Poppy” to his grandchildren.  In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Aleshia Marion.  Surviving are his wife, Betty Hutchens Smith; his grandchildren, Peyton Marion, Allison Marion, Michelle Marion, Zocoby Marion; his step-children, Brandy Hayes, Timothy Hayes, Summer Bobbitt; several step-grandchildren; and his special friend and sister-in-law, Patty Fulp.  A Private  Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
