Susan Fleming Alem passed away peacefully on May 1st, 2024 in Greensboro, North Carolina at the age of 90. She is preceded in death by her parents Henry Davis Fleming, Sr. and Fleeta Boyd Fleming husband, her husband Fehmi Mohammed Alem; her sister Phyllis Stroud; and her brother Henry Davis Fleming, Jr. She is survived by her sister Jane Webster of Camden, South Carolina; daughter and son and their spouses Rana and Jon Kaplan of Los Angeles, Samir and Gina Alem of Greensboro, North Carolina; and her grandchildren, Sophia Alem of New York, New York; Rex Kaplan of Los Angeles, California; and Leila Alem of Greensboro, North Carolina. Susan was born on December 21st, 1933 in Boonville, North Carolina. She attended school at the Woman's College at the University of North Carolina, now known as the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and graduated from American University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Government and Public Administration. Susan met her husband, Fehmi Alem while they were both studying at American University. Susan was a caring and strong woman who was loved by all who knew her. She loved to read, go for walks around her neighborhood, and do crossword puzzles. She was an avid participant in both local and national politics for most of her adult life. Most of all, she loved to cheer on the Carolina Tar Heels in any sporting event, particularly basketball. She will be greatly missed. There will be a ceremony on Saturday, May 11th reserved for immediate family only. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in her memory.
