Mrs. Vienna Blanche Rains Johnson, 87, passed away in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Friday, November 14, 2025. She was born on March 2, 1938, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to the late Evan Conrad Rains and Saima Elizabeth Keranen Rains. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Laura R. Shell and Adele R. Authier, and her brother, K. Thomas Rains. Mrs. Johnson, a former first-grade teacher and DSS caseworker, enjoyed traveling (especially internationally), University of Michigan sports and Detroit Tigers games, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, genealogical research, and babies. She was always very generous to the less fortunate, particularly foster children. She also stressed the importance of education and continued learning throughout her life. She is survived by her five children: Valerie (Lee) Zachary, Pamela (Richard) Farran, Jeffrey J. Johnson, Jennifer L. Johnson, and Jack D. Johnson; nine grandchildren: Richard Farran, Brittany Johnson, Michael Farran, Rachel Zachary, Brandon Wiley, Mitchell Wiley, Owen Johnson, Max Johnson, and Holden Johnson; and eight great-grandchildren: Dawson Trollard, Corbin Johnson, Joseph Farran, Benjamin Farran, Asher Wiley, Ezra Wiley, Lydia Wiley, and Lucy Lyons; and her brothers and sisters-in-law, Roger and Gwen Rains and Russell and Pam Rains, and her sister, Crystal Harrison; and her close cousin Karen Lilley. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The family requests that any memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
